Washington – In response to the new interim final rule on asylum proceedings issued by the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security, #WelcomeWithDignity issued the following statement:

“Right now, we do not have a functioning asylum system. Our borders are closed to people seeking protection under Trump-era policies that the current administration has embraced,” said Melina Roche, campaign manager for #WelcomeWithDignity. “While we commend the Biden administration’s effort to address shortcomings in how people seeking safety are processed at our borders, we are deeply concerned that the emphasis on speed will undermine access to a fair asylum system and threaten the Constitutional guarantee of due process. It is past time for President Biden to end Trump-era anti-asylum policies. #WelcomeWithDignity and its partners stand ready to work with the administration to resolve these concerns and create a fair, timely, and humane asylum system that welcomes all people seeking safety with dignity.”
